Working our way to wisdom; learning our way for life.

Enabling children to flourish and succeed

A Bright Start to the Day at Albert Village Community Primary School

Albert Village Community Primary School, located near Swadlincote in Leicestershire, is celebrating the continued success of its thriving breakfast club, which provides high-quality before-school childcare for their pupils to help support families.

The initiative was carefully developed following consultation with parents, led by the school’s pupil governors, who gathered feedback during parents’ evening to ensure demand and shape provision. This collaborative approach has helped create a breakfast club that reflects the needs of their families.

Over the past year, dedicated staff members—Lindsey Marshall, Sian Hewitt, Livi Jenkin and Claire Osborne—have gone above and beyond to build a welcoming and inclusive environment. Through strong relationships, structured routines, and creative planning, they have developed a provision that promotes pupil wellbeing, engagement, and enjoyment.

The breakfast club runs every weekday from 7:30am to 8:45am, offering flexible and affordable wraparound care for their families who live in the Swadlincote area. Children are welcomed into a vibrant space with a wide range of activities including table tennis, table football, board games, construction play, and seasonal arts and crafts. A nutritious breakfast of toast, fruit, cereals, and spreads is provided each morning.

Staff have shown exceptional commitment by sourcing resources creatively and proactively, often contributing items such as table football, arts and crafts materials, books, and games themselves. Their teamwork and dedication have ensured a rich and varied experience for pupils.

The club has quickly become a popular part of school life, with some children choosing to attend simply because they enjoy it so much. It fosters a strong sense of belonging, ensuring every child feels included, respected, and ready to start their day positively.

One pupil shared: “All the adults are really kind, and I like starting my day with them.”

Parents have also praised the club, noting how warmly their children are welcomed and how much they look forward to attending—even at the start of the week. Some families report their children enthusiastically recommending the breakfast club to friends at other schools.

Headteacher Cheryl Lott commented:
“Our breakfast club plays an important role in giving children a calm, happy and positive start to the day. It is wonderful to see pupils arriving each morning feeling settled, included and ready to learn. The dedication of our staff and the enthusiasm of our children have made this a really special part of school life.”

The school believes that a positive start each morning is key to academic success and emotional wellbeing, and the breakfast club continues to play an important role in supporting this vision.
