Pupils Inspired by Special Visit at Albert Village Community Primary School

Pupils at Albert Village Community Primary School were delighted to welcome a very special guest, Mark Haggan, Vice Chair of Rise Multi Academy Trust, for an inspiring visit focused on the importance of environmental responsibility.
The school has a strong commitment to protecting the natural world and promoting sustainability, with pupils actively learning how to care for their environment and keep their community clean and safe. This ethos is embedded across school life, with initiatives including visits from organisations such as W.I.L.E (Wombles In Litter Education) and participation in BBC Leicester’s Our Planet, Our Pledge: Celebrating 100 Years of Attenborough.
During his visit, Mark shared his own experiences of environmental activism, recalling how he started an environmental group during his school years. Encouraged by an inspiring teacher, Jimmy Christie, he spoke about how presenting his ideas in assembly helped build his confidence—something that has stayed with him into adulthood, where he now regularly speaks at events.

Mark also reflected on the lasting impact of that early initiative; with the environmental group he founded still active today. On its 30th anniversary, he was invited back—thanks to inspiration from Blue Peter—to present an award to Mr Christie in recognition of the many young people he had inspired over the years.
His visit made a lasting impression on pupils at Albert Village Community Primary School, demonstrating how small actions at a young age can lead to meaningful change and lifelong skills.

The visit was warmly received by pupils, who were inspired by Mark’s message and enthusiasm.
Headteacher Cheryl Lott said:
“We are incredibly grateful to Mark for taking the time to visit and share such an inspiring story. Experiences like this bring learning to life and show our pupils that their ideas, passions and actions can genuinely make a difference. It was a wonderful assembly that perfectly reflected our values as a school.”
Pupil feedback included:
-
“I liked how he said, ‘be yourself and be who you are and don't change it’.”
-
“He talked about being kind and being kind always matters.”
-
“He inspired me because he said explore the world around you and learn what's out there.”
The school extends its sincere thanks to Mark for taking the time to share his story and inspire the next generation to take an active role in protecting the environment.
